Social life can simply be defined as having healthy relationships with the people that you know, creating new relationship with the people that you meet, and most importantly maintaining both your old and new relationships. So, if you were asked today to put a price tag on your social life, how much will it be worth?

There is nothing as important as having friends and making new ones. If you are stressed, one meeting with your friends or loved ones can make you forget all your problems and feel alive. Go out with your friends, meet new people, engage in fun activities and you will be guaranteed a longer lifespan. In addition, going out often will help you to have a clear mind and concentrate on whatever it is that you do. If you feel low, you can really use the help of your friends.

According to a recent study, each new friend that you make plays a very vital role in your life. In fact, they say that meeting new people and making them your friends feels like receiving a pay rise of 60k. What’s more, having face to face social events with your friends can make you to feel more appreciated and loved. You will feel happier than being alone in the house or going out alone.

We all feel lonely sometimes and that’s why it is advisable to have many friends. Staying alone or being lonely for a long time can have some serious effects on your health. For example, you can suffer from depression and spend a lot of money on treatment. Friends can literally save your life. Going out regularly can actually reduce your risk of death by around 50 per cent.

Your social life is worth more than you can imagine. Social life is what defines you as a person. As the saying goes “show me your friends and I will tell you the kind of person that you are”, good friends will always make your life easier and interesting. They will transform your hardships to happy moments, and your better moments to best moments.

In general, apart from your family and loved ones, your friends are the most important people in your life. If you treat them right, they will always support you and be there for you whenever you need them. Go out with them, meet new people, make new friends, and have fun. You can also volunteer, get involved in community work, and go out often. The point of interest here is to go out as many times as you can and enjoy life responsibly. This is the least that you can do for yourself.

Are all the various social media platforms we join today making us a less sociable generation of introverted couch potatoes?

Same Analogy – Different Medium:

Those of a certain age will no doubt be able to remember when television first became available to the masses. Within a couple of years sociologists were predicting life would never be the same again. Face to face social interaction would disappear as we all sat hypnotised by the monster in the living room.

Many years later, and life changing games consoles descended on the population. Children (and many adults) the world over, were glued to their television screens. The latest games and game consoles were the topic of conversation during school break-time. Nothing would be the same again – again. Outside activities with friends and family would become a part of history. Yet still the predictions proved pretty groundless.

Blame the Smartphone:

Time moved on. From the early word-processors, to home computers the internet, and social media, the technological revolution has forged ahead, with one big difference.

The advent of smartphones, tablets and notebooks means nowadays your social media activity is no longer tied to your home. You can take it with you, and for those with an addictive personality, they are never far from the next fix. No matter what the venue, from cafes to bars to shopping centres; everywhere you look singles, couples, and families can be seen studying the screen, each involved in their own little world.

The strength of social media can’t be over-estimated. It has brought down regimes and heads of government, but it also has much going for it socially.

There are many reasons why online social activity appears preferential to face-to-face socialising, not least lack of time. Having to combine bringing up a family with working full time; often leaves little spare time and even less spare cash, for other activities. Without social media, many would have no contact with family or close friends – to them it’s a lifeline.

Social Media can Boost your Face-to-Face Activities:

It’s also a great way to expand your real life social circle and partake in activities you thought you would never get the chance to do again.

For organisations such as MixingOut, social media is the ideal medium to promote our numerous social activities. That old adage ’Like attracts like’ is true across all areas of human activity. People new to an area, recently retired, or who wish to increase their social pursuits, can search out people and groups with similar interests.

Many people have no wish to develop a one-on-one relationship, even a one-on-one friendship comes with possible risks. MixingOut is not about relationships, it’s about groups of like minded people enjoying a range of different activities from coffee mornings, to restaurant visits, to theatre visits, to dog walking in the hills.

The positive benefits of getting out and about are legion. Mental stimulation and a little exercise can promote a greater feeling of wellbeing. One’s social circle is expanded, new hobbies and pursuits undertaken and existing skills honed. But, most importantly, new friends with similar interests are made.

Yes, social media has its downside, but it also has its upside. Used in the right way it can be your gateway to a genuinely more fulfilling and enjoyable social life, where the need to be forever checking Facebook, Snapchat, or Twitter becomes a thing of the past.

Waking up

The one time of the year when having young children actually serves as a welcome wakeup-call. Otherwise you would probably sleep through the entire festivities, having celebrated heavily the night before.

If you don’t have kids, don’t worry, you’re bound to know some idiot who thinks it would be a good idea to send you a “merry xmas” text at eight in the sodding morning.

Presents (round 1)

This is where the first official round of present-opening takes place, the ones that have been positioned perfectly under your tree like a beautiful, ornate scene out of a Christmas catalogue… soon to resemble the opening scenes from Saving Private Ryan.

Tidying up (round 1)

Roughy three minutes later, give or take, depending on how well you were able to locate those tricky taped-down corners and peel off the sellotape, it’s time to bag everything up… a bit like the closing scene from Saving Private Ryan.

The come down

It’s only ten in the morning and already the novelty of Christmas has completely worn off. It may have something to do with the fact that your adrenaline levels have depleted exponentially after the initial buildup, or maybe it’s because you didn’t get that PS4/ Dolce & Gabana set you’d been hinting at for so long. Either way, it’s just a day like any other now, it’s not even snowing, and you couldn’t care less.

Seeing relatives

Depending on how much you actually like your extended family, this will either be an imposition or a massive imposition. It makes no difference if you’re going round to theirs or it’s the other way around; you have to make an effort of some sorts and it hurts.

Presents (round 2)

This is where you have to physically exchange gifts like two converging tribes who are secretly fragile and apologetic on the inside. Just open your present, smile, and move on to the next.

Never, I repeat never, say what you have just received out loud. This is a blatant sign of feigning gratification. Nobody has ever opened a 55inch television and said “Ahhh, a 55 inch television!”.

Tidying up (round 2)

This time it’s fine. Your mum will do it.

Christmas lunch and the airing of truths

By now you’ve probably consumed copious amounts of alcohol and chocolate, which, contrary to belief, does not ruin your appetite. Alcohol does, however, inhibit your ability to remain civil at the dinner table and you will probably make a snide remark about the turkey, or mention the fact that Dam Busters isn’t a proper Christmas movie, no matter what your grandad used to say.

Nothing consolidates friendship better than good gift-giving… at least that’s what some of our mates usually say around this time of year. So in the spirit of things, we’ve decided to do a rundown of some the best presents for Christmas 2015.

For your bloke mate who likes his food Curry and chips flavoured chocolate

Inspired by the nations favourite takeaway dish – after a few pints presumably – this chocolatey creation is flavoured with a mild Midas and topped with crunch, salty chips.
Lads, at just under £4:00, this would make a cool stocking filler for your best bloke mate, not your other half.

For your ‘it-girl’ mate Emergency Gin and Tonic Kit

This ‘emergency kit’ contains all the essential ingredients for gin, should your local off license run out, or a zombie apocalypse lead to scarce resources and looting. Either way, everything you need is freshly packed into this tight little container.

For your posh mate Bath Tea Bag Box

Fragranced with essential oils and infused with different smelling tea leaves, including mandarin and orange blossom, Lime and cedarwood, and tuberose and jasmine, these bath bags will leave the tub as warm and cosy as a steaming mug of tea.

For your mate with twisted humour Misfortune cookies

Sweet, crumbly, and brilliantly macabre. These fortune cookies contain a wicked twist and that’s all part of the fun. Your mate will have a laugh cracking these open at the next family dinner.

For your geek mate Sphero BB-8

If you value your friendship at £129.99 or more, then your geekiest mate will definitely get a kick out of this BB-8 droid from the upcoming Star Wars movie. Controlled by smartphone, in the same way as previous Sphero models, BB-8 roams around with authentic movements, lights, and sounds.

We’ve been giving you guys ideas on how to celebrate Halloween for three years running now; from enthusiasts to conscious objectors, there’s plenty of ways to please everybody. So this year we thought we’d go down the route of horror movies – with a difference.

That’s right, even the most devout “Halloween is a stupid, made-up holiday for kids” non-believer can’t argue with our suggestion on this one. Watching scary movies is one of the best ways to spend Oct. 31st, or if you already have party plans, Nov 1st, while you’re nursing a hangover.

So turn the lights down, grab some popcorn, and enjoy!

Blood: The Last Vampire

This Japanese anime (yes, it’s a cartoon, but it’s definitely NOT for kids) follows Saya, the world’s last remaining vampire and humanity’s only protector against deadly demonic forces. The film takes place in the days leading up to the Vietnamese war, on a US army base in Japan, where Saya is tasked by the Secret Service to hunt a pack of demons responsible for a string of grisly murders against its inhabitants.

The animation is beautifully cinematic, and the action set pieces are spectacular, but what makes Blood perfect viewing for Halloween is its atmosphere and sleek story. Not your typical Halloween vampire movie.

What We Do in the Shadows

Speaking of non-typical vampire movies, What We Do in the Shadows is humorous look at three modern-day vampires living together in a house in New Zealand. The film is written by and stars Flight of the Concords’ Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi, which should give you some idea of what to expect from this very dark comedy. Incase not, check out this reel of very, very funny moments.

Housebound

Another horror comedy from New Zealand, Housebound is just as terrifying as it is funny at times. When a female young offender is sentenced to house arrest with her mum, she begins to notice strange things happening.

The laughs and funny dialogue are punctuated with moments of genuine shock and tension. This is comedy at its absolute weirdest – in a truly scary kind of way.

The Cabin in the Woods

You may have heard of this one when it first came out… and totally missed the concept, based on its generic title and premise of teenagers, isolated cabin, and creepy goings on.

In actual fact, Cabin in the Woods is a send-up of the traditional horror/slasher genre that is so mind bending, we couldn’t help but love it. It essentially revolves around a satanic corporation who are tasked with staging cheesy horror movie setups in order to keep satanic forces entertained. It’s clever, funny and cruel.

Living with your mates can be no bad thing. Imagine somebody told you when you were six that you had a choice of getting married (yuk, yuk, ugh) or living in the same house as your best friend…We’d have chosen friend any day!

But when it comes to guys living together and girls living together, there’s no contest, the girls have got it down. ‘Why?’ you ask. Well for one thing, no two girls living together would ever wrap the other’s bedroom doorway in clingfilm whilst they were sleeping and yell “FIRE!”.

Still not convinced, guys? Here’s 4 reasons why us female housemates are just better. Remember, these reasons are just for fun… kind of.

Clothes all over the place is considered a walk-in wardrobe

When a guy leave clothes lying about, it’s not a pretty sight (or smell). But when any of two women leave shoes scattered on the floor, a top strewn over the back of the sofa, or the odd jacket here and there, it’s more like a walk-in wardrobe for the other person.

A Chinese takeaway for One goes a long way

Ordering food to eat in is super-simple. Guys will order 3 or 4 of everything and most of it goes to waste, or towards breakfast the next morning. When it comes to ordering a takeaway with your live-in gal pal, there’s literally no messing.

A problem shared…

When one of you has the problem, the other knows just how to pick up the pieces because living together so long means they know you better than anybody. If two guys tried the same thing, we can only imagine the shenanigans.

Supported when drunk

Living with another girl means somebody is there to take of you when you get home stupid-drunk. They know just how to handle you, what you need, and will take the time to remove your makeup and help you into bed. That level of care would never exist between to male housemates.

Summer is officially over and the past few months has seen some awesome blockbusters with the likes of Jurassic World, Mad Max, Terminator Genysis, and the hilarious Ted 2. But it’s pretty safe to say the best of 2015’s releases have been saved for the latter half of the year.

So with much anticipation and a great deal of ‘geeking-out’, we run down the movies we’re most excited for…

The H8ful Eight

Tarantino’s latest offering closes his periodic trilogy (Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained), taking place some time after the American Civil War and revolving around eight westerners who seek refuge in a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass during a blizzard.

Among this odious octet are a ruthless hangman (Kurt Russell) and his psychopathic prisoner, a bounty hunter (Samuel.L Jackson), and a Confederate General, of which one is not who they claim to be.

Every Tarantino film that comes out is more than just another movie release, it’s an event, which is why we’re so excited for this one. Expect violence and blood by the bucketload, peppered with quick-fire dialogue and lashings of cinematic reference for good good measure.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Another monumental event, this one, something fans of the series have been waiting for since the release of the disappointing prequels more than decade ago. This time however, all will be redeemed as JJ Abrams – the creator of television’s Lost and the guy who spectacularly rebooted the Star Trek franchise – is at the creative helm.

Set 30 years after Return of the Jedi, in a galaxy far, far away… The Force Awakens is a continuation of the original trilogy and sees remnants of the fallen Galactic Empire disrupt the peace established at the end of the last movie.

Box Office projections for Star Wars are insane, predicted to top Avatar (currently the highest-grossing movie of all time) and smash all sorts of records. Movie-goers and longtime fans everywhere will be eager to see how events play out in one of cinema’s most beloved stories. But perhaps the biggest allure is the return of the original cast, including Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher.

007 James Bond: Spectre

Slated for an October release, the latest Bond movie – and likely the penultimate in Daniel Craig’s chronicling of the series – sees everything come full circle; with the secret agent on the cusp of retirement and the return of Casino Royale’s illusive Mr.White, as well as the first appearance of shadowy criminal organisation Spectre.

Other than the initial premise, not much else is known about this one. But with Christopher Waltz as the main protagonist and Sam Mendez returning to director’s chair after his success with SkyFall, there’s plenty to get excited about.

The sequel to Seth McFarlane’s Ted came out last week and we can’t recommend it highly enough, especially if you like your humour rude, crude and tiptoeing the razor’s edge of controversy.

But enough about the movie, because it’s Ted that really fascinates us. Yes, he may not be the greatest role model for the kids but we can’t help but love him. And we definitely would have loved to have him as a cuddly toy when we were little.

Unfortunately, Ted wasn’t around back then and even if he was, we seriously doubt our parents would have let us play with him. Instead we (collective guys and girls around the office) received some pretty amazing toys back and the day, some of which we think are even better than the foul-mouthed, pot-smoking, philandering teddy himself.

1. He-man Castle Greyskull play set

By the power of Greyskull – this was the object of many prepubescent boys’ desire back in the day. If you were lucky enough to have one then you were the envy of all your mates.

2. My Little Pony Dream Castle play set

The girls’ equivalent was much brighter, prettier, a lot more pink but didn’t have the same wow factor. It still was however, the no.1 spot for all those plastic ponies to graze.

3. Thundercats Sword of Omens (Batteries not included)

Back in the late 80’s and early 90’s, the Thundercats were massive. Wielded by their heroic leader Lion-o, the Sword of Omens lit up in the dark and was a sword for crying out loud – of course we all wanted one!

4. Pogo Ball

Like the weird amalgamation of a pogo-stick and Space Hopper, the Pogo Ball kept kids bouncing up and down those pavements all summer long.

5. Teddy Ruxpin

The original talking-ted (so long as you had the cassette tapes), Teddy Ruxpin would tell us bedtime stories and sing lullabies so mum and dad didn’t have to.

6. Pound Puppies

With a marketing campaign that would probably be perceived today as extortionate, kids and parents everywhere were guilted into buying these sad, abandoned, but oh so adorable puppies.

Let me take you back to the Summer of 1993.

Like most of the kids my age, I was bat-shit crazy for anything about dinosaurs and seeing Jurassic Park for the first time was the cultural equivalent of a spiritual awakening. I went into that cinema a young, impressional boy, but I came out a changed person.

That was more than twenty years ago. Since then, so much has equally shaped and affected me – as I imagine it has for you also – and the release of the latest Jurassic World film has brought this to my immediate attention.

If you haven’t already seen it, I definitely recommend you and some friends go for a fun night out, especially if you remember the first one with such fondness and reverence as I do. In the meanwhile, here’s 3 things we’ve all learned during that time.

1. Those childhood friendships don’t last forever

After watching Jurassic Park for the first time, I have vivid memories of recreating some of my favourite parts of the movie with my mates – basically ‘tag’ in the woods but with dinosaurs – and thinking to myself that these were the people I’d be friends with forever.

Fast forward two decades and I can honestly say I’m not in regular contact with any of them – and one lives two doors down the road!

2. … But they’ll always be the most understanding

It makes no difference whether you’ve not seen them in months or years, the friends you had when you were little will always be more understanding and less judgemental than the ones you make in later life.

That’s because they still remember you at your most naive, you most vulnerable – as you do them – and no matter what’s going on in your personal life right now, they will always give you the time of day and sympathetic ear like no other. Trust me.

3. You will not have everything figured out by now

Chances are you already had the rest of the life sorted when you were 6.

You were going to finish school, get that job you’ve seen somewhere in the movies – you know the one, where it never seems to encroach on the characters lives and if it does, it only makes their lives more fun and interesting – and all the trimmings that go with it.

Somewhere along the way, probably around the time you actually did finish school, you realised life doesn’t work out that way. But as a result you’ll learn new things, experience unexpected relationships and become a person you never envisaged. and isn’t that more exciting?
